چکیده

This paper presents a numerical study concerning an improved heat sink for a light emitting diodes (LED) lamp operating under natural convection conditions. Basic geometry of the heat sink is of cylindrical nature, to be obtained from cutting an aluminum extruded bar comprising a cylindrical central core and a number of uniformly distributed radial fins. Minimum diameter of the central core is fixed and the parameters to be explored are the number of fins, their thickness, length (radial dimension) and height. Although not included in the numerical simulations, the thermal resistance due to the use of a thin thermal interface material (TIM) layer between the LED lamp back and the heat sink is taken into account in the analysis. The main objective of the heat sink is to cool the LED lamp so that the lamp maximum temperature at the contact region with the heat sink is maintained below the critical temperature given by the manufacturer. This is a crucial aspect in what concerns the expected lifetime of the LED lamp and should be achieved at the expenses of as low as possible aluminum mass. Taking these criteria in mind, a design procedure is proposed and followed in the search for the improved heat sink to cool a particular LED lamp. Results obtained with the commercial code ANSYS-CFX clearly show the relative importance of the different governing parameters on the heat sink performance and allow the choice of the better solution within the frame of dimensional constrains. Although the present results concern a particular LED lamp, the proposed methodology can be extended to other types of heat sinks for general light and/ or electronic components. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Optimization of a chimney design for cooling efficiency of a radial heat sink in a LED downlight

A cooling system, consisting of a chimney and a radial heat sink, was developed for a light-emitting diode (LED) downlight to replace a conventional light for saving energy. Natural convection was simulated with a numerical model that was verified experimentally. When the chimney was installed around the radial heat sink, the cooling efficiency of the heat sink was improved because the cooling ...

Study on Thermal Design of 15W-class LED Fog lamps for vehicles

The LED light source with low power and high luminous efficiency has been used in the automotive industry. In this study, a 15W LED fog lamp with better visibility and low price was developed using the SMD type LED modules. To this end, the thermal performance of the fog lamp was optimized by adjusting the number of heat sink fins, heat pipes and the emissivity of the heatsink. As a result, the...

Correlation of cross-cut cylindrical heat sink to improve the orientation effect of LED light bulbs

We investigate cross-cut cylindrical heat sink to improve cooling of a light-emitting diode (LED) bulb compared with conventional plate-fin cylindrical heat sinks using various installation angles. In contrast to plate-fin heat sinks, whereby the fins in the upper heat sink do not provide effective cooling at large installation angles, flow formed between the cross-cut fins and the air reached ...

Thermal performance of a PCB channel heat sink for LED light bulbs

In this study, the thermal performance of the printed circuit board (PCB) as a heat sink for the light-emitting diode (LED) bulb is analyzed. Cooling air is drawn through the bottom inlet of a case and exchanges heat from a vertically aligned PCB acting as a heat sink fin. The air then exits through a top outlet. Cooling performance is improved by arranging parallel PCBs to form a channel. Heat...
